BOULDER CITY, Nev. – The Georgia Southwestern State University men's golf team opened the NCAA Division II National Championships with a strong first round Monday at Boulder Creek Golf Club, carding a 5-under-par 283 to sit tied for fifth after 18 holes.
The Hurricanes are tied with No. 23 Colorado Christian University Athletics and trail co-leaders No. 19 West Texas A&M University Athletics and No. 35 University of Missouri–St. Louis Athletics by five shots entering Tuesday's second round. The national championship field of 20 schools features 11 teams currently ranked in the top 25, including the nation's top six programs.
GSW placed four golfers at even par or better during the opening round, led by junior
Jordan Jones, who fired a 3-under 69 to move into a tie for 10th individually. Jones played a steady round throughout the afternoon, recording four birdies and an eagle.
Oscar Hammar and
Sacha Corlouer each added 1-under 71s for the Hurricanes, while
Stefan Rojas finished even par with a 72.
Sam Brown rounded out the lineup at 2-over 74.
The Hurricanes made their biggest move on the par-5 holes, finishing tied for second in the field in par-5 scoring at 14-under for the round. GSW averaged 4.30 strokes on the par 5s, matching Colorado Christian and trailing only Lee at 16-under.
The top eight teams following Wednesday's third and final stroke-play round will advance to medal play match play competition to determine the national champion.
GSW returns to the course Tuesday for Round 2 beginning at 2:10 p.m. EDT.
