AMERICUS, Ga. — The Georgia Southwestern State University women's tennis team opened Peach Belt Conference play Friday afternoon, falling 7-0 to No. 37 Middle Georgia at the Susan K. Smith Tennis Complex.
Facing a nationally ranked opponent, the Lady Hurricanes were tested across the lineup as Middle Georgia swept the doubles point and carried that momentum into singles play.
In doubles, the Hurricanes looked to find an early foothold, with
Luiza Rodrigues and
Luana Borini battling at No. 2 before dropping a tightly contested 7-5 decision. Middle Georgia secured the point with wins on all three courts.
Singles play saw the Knights maintain control, earning straight-set victories on each court to close out the match. Rodrigues competed at No. 1 singles, and had the closest match at 6-3, 6-3, while
Mariana Sorrilha, Borini,
Mabry Bowron,
Natalia Paiva and
EmmaRae Smith rounded out the lineup for Georgia Southwestern.
The match marked the conference opener for both teams, with Middle Georgia improving to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in Peach Belt Conference play.
Georgia Southwestern falls to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in league action and will look to regroup as conference play continues.
