Crazy Rally Comes Up Short At West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Georgia Southwestern baseball team scored eight runs over the final two innings at Cole Field on Wednesday evening but came up short of a monumental comeback, falling 10-9 to West Georgia.

GSW lost its third straight game and fell to 3-4 this spring, while West Georgia improved to 5-2.

The Hurricanes found themselves in a 9-0 deficit after UWG scored four runs in the third inning and pushed across five more in the fifth. GSW was retired in order the first three frames before Clay Patrick led off the fourth with a single. Patrick was stranded on second to end the inning, but in the seventh GSW broke through for its first run as Alex Kranick brought home Will Redding with a sacrifice fly.

In the eighth inning, GSW managed to score three runs without getting a hit. An error, three walks and a hit batter paved the way for the start of the Hurricanes late rally.

In the ninth, GSW went the way of a more traditional offensive outburst by putting together five hits, including a double from Jonathan Martin, with two walks and five runs. Evan Alderman and Dakota Long had RBI singles. Jared Jones drove in two, but the tying run was left on second base.

Long finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead GSW batters.

Artemis Kadkhodaian was the lone UWG batter with multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4 as well.

Starting pitcher Jarrod Crum (0-1) took the loss for GSW. Drew Powers delivered three innings of solid relief for the Hurricanes, holding UWG to a pair of hits and no earned runs. Matt Hubbard pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

UWG starter Ryan Parker (1-0) went seven innings, scattered three hits and held GSW to one run while striking out six. It took four pitchers out of the bullpen to get the final six outs for the Wolves as they combined to walk six and strike out two.

The Hurricanes return home to host North Greenville for a three-game weekend series that begins Friday at 5 p.m.
