Avila Scores Twice, Leads GSW To Overtime Win

WEST POINT, Ga. - Isaac Avila scored the final two Georgia Southwestern goals, including the deciding score in overtime, to lead the Hurricanes soccer team to a 3-2 victory at Point University on Tuesday evening.

GSW notched its fourth victory of the season, the most by the program since joining the NCAA in 2006, and improved its record to 4-10-2. Point falls to 4-10-1.

Point found a way to score early and late in this match as the Skyhawks swooped in and snagged a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the contest, then trailing 2-1, scored the equalizer with less than a minute remaining in regulation.

The Skyhawks led 1-0 at the halftime break.

Chris Steinwachs evened the match for GSW when he scored in the 69th minute, then turned around and delivered the assist to Avila in the 87th minute to put the Hurricanes ahead, 2-1.

In overtime Avila drilled the winning goal off an assist from Brennan Bauschka in the 104th minute.

Avila became the first Hurricane in over two years to record two goals in a match. The first since Michael Corrigan scored twice at Lander on Sept. 15, 2012.

GSW finished with a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal and committed six more fouls than Point, 18-12. Corner kicks were even at 3-3.

GSW goalkeeper Garrett Blamire saved two. Tony Olvera stopped three for Point.

The Hurricanes have seen improved offensive output in 2014 as the squad has accounted for the second-most goals scored in a season in program history, three shy of the record.

Southwestern wraps up its 2014 campaign on Sunday with a 1:30 p.m. match at Spring Hill.
