Polly Punches One In, But 'Canes Lose Finale

MOBILE, Ala. - A pair of first-half goals by Spring Hill College proved to be too much to overcome as the Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team was defeated, 3-1, in its season finale on Sunday afternoon at Library Field.

The Hurricanes end their 2014 campaign with a record of 4-11-2. It's the most wins by the program since joining the NCAA in 2006. Spring Hill wraps up its season with a 3-11 record.

Salvador Sanchis broke a scoreless match in the 33rd minute on Sunday when his header found the back of the net off a cross from Mario Escalante. The Badgers struck again minutes later when Andrew McInnis tapped in a rebound at the 35:41 mark to help send the home squad into the halftime break up 2-0.

Silvio Polly brought the Hurricanes back to life in the 66th minute when he pounced on a blocked shot by Cesar Espinoza to score his first goal of the season and cut the Badgers lead in half to 2-1.

A Spring Hill goal from Matthew Lieshout in the 77th minute put the match out of reach for Southwestern.

Spring Hill finished with a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal while committing six more fouls, 16-10, than the Hurricanes. Corner kicks were even at 3-3.

GSW goalkeeper Joshua Swift saved three. Patrick Danner stopped four for Spring Hill.

Despite being held to one goal in the finale, the Hurricanes saw marked improvement in their offensive output in 2014 as the squad accounted for the second-most goals scored in a season in program history, two shy of the record.
