AMERICUS - Georgia Southwestern starting pitcher Earl Dupree threw nine innings and did not allow an earned run, the offense doubled West Alabama's hit total, but the Hurricanes could not pick up a win in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Hurricane Stadium. West Alabama defeated GSW, 4-2, in 12 innings.
The Hurricanes belted 12 hits in the contest, but stranded 12 runners on base and committed a crippling five errors.
GSW falls to 2-5 overall and the visiting Tigers notch two wins in the three-game series to improve to 2-5 this season.
A pair of two-out errors by GSW in the fourth inning allowed West Alabama to jump ahead, 2-0.
Neal Chambless cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame with his RBI-single to center that scored Josh Sanders.
The Hurricanes went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position until the eighth inning when Chambless struck again. This time the junior from Hamilton, Ga. delivered a single down the left-field line that plated Michel Coffey.
GSW had two opportunities to drive in the go-ahead run from second base (10th and 11th innings) before UWA eventually pushed across the deciding score in the 12th.
Chambless finished a game-best 4-for-6 at the plate to lead GSW. Jarrod Taylor and Randall Sheffield added two hits apiece.
Jack Cockrum had two hits for UWA.
Dupree, a freshman from Hawkinsville, Ga., scattered four hits and struck out three batters. Ryan Mosley (0-1) surrendered both runs - one earned - and pitched three innings. He walked one and struck out one.
UWA trotted out five pitchers in the ballgame. Jeremy White (1-0) picked up his first victory after tossing 2 1/3 innings.
The Hurricanes travel to Valdosta State on Wednesday for a 5 p.m. non-conference game.
