GSW begins 8-game road trip with split

ANDERSON, S.C. - After dropping the opener at Anderson, 4-1, the Georgia Southwestern softball team rebounded with a 5-1 victory in the nightcap to earn a split on Tuesday afternoon at Smethers Field.

Both teams were held to four hits apiece in Game 1, but Anderson made the most of a GSW error in the second inning and back-to-back walks in the sixth inning to post a pair of runs in both frames for the win.

Nichole Griffin went 2-for-3 with one RBI to lead GSW hitters.

Katie Maddox (2-3) takes the loss for the Lady Hurricanes after six innings of work. She allowed the four runs - two earned - on four hits, walked five and struck out two.

In Game 2, GSW broke up a scoreless game in the fifth inning with four runs, added a run in the sixth and picked up a 5-1 victory.

The Lady 'Canes improve to 17-21 overall and Anderson dips to 17-8.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth inning, Hayley Knight doubled down the left field line to score Griffin and Jessica Martin. The Trojans made a two-run error on the next at bat and GSW took a 4-0 lead.

In the sixth, Heather Hodge brought home Martin, who had doubled to start the inning and advanced to third on a Griffin ground out, on an infield single.

Knight finished 3-for-4 in the nightcap with a double, two RBIs and a run scored to lead GSW. Griffin and Hodge added two hits apiece.

Christie Shankle (3-8) earned the complete-game win after throwing seven innings, allowing one run in the seventh, walking one and striking out two.

Southwestern is back on the diamond on Wednesday at Erskine for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
