Game Recap: Baseball |

'Canes strand 18 in 11-4 loss

The Georgia Southwestern baseball team surrendered four runs in the first inning, four more in the third - to fall behind 8-2 - and the University of West Florida posted an 11-4 victory over GSW on Tuesday evening at Hurricane Stadium. The 'Canes had plenty off opportunities to close the gap throughout the game, leaving the bases loaded three times and stranding a total of 18 runners.

The Argonauts wasted no time getting on the board with a four-run first inning.

GSW answered with two runs in the bottom of the first.  The 'Canes converted a Chris Lingham walk and Zack Stanton's hit by pitch into a pair of runs when Kevin Carroll cleared the bases with a single to left field.

UWF added four more runs in the third inning to push the lead to 8-2.

Byron Haynes hit his team-leading ninth home run of the season for GSW, a solo shot, in the bottom of the third.

West Florida added a run in the fourth and two more in the eighth.

Southwestern scored the final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth off a Paschel Poston RBI single.

With 10 hits, eight walks and four hit batters, GSW put plenty of runners on base.

Stanton finished 2-for-4, scored two runs, walked and was hit by pitch to lead Southwestern at the plate. Trent Dooley was also hit by a pitch and went 2-for-5 with a double.

GSW starter Tyler Daniel (2-7) threw 5 1/3 innings, allowed nine runs (eight earned) and 12 hits to take the loss. Stephen Daneman surrendered two runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief before Corey Hawes tossed a scoreless ninth.

Shane Waller (3-1) picked up the win for UWF throwing 5 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run and five hits.

Ryan Day and Dustin Lawley each went 3-for-6 to lead West Florida (30-13) hitters.

Tuesday's game was the first meeting between the schools in almost 15 years (May 18, 1995).

Southwestern (21-14) and UWF are back on the diamond at Hurricane Stadium tomorrow (4/14) at 2 p.m.
