The Georgia Southwestern softball team cruised to a doubleheader
sweep of Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon at Lady
'Canes Field. The Lady Hurricanes held WC to a single hit
while winning 11-0 in the opener. Katie Mueller and Jessica Martin
combined for a no-hitter in the nightcap, as GSW won 14-0.
GSW (10-9) has won eight of their last nine games and is over
.500 for time since starting the season 1-0. Gabby Buck finished
the afternoon 4-for-7 with a grand slam and a total of six RBI.
Heather Hodge and Heather Denny added home runs for the Lady
'Canes.
Southwestern pitchers, five over the two games, threw 10 innings
of scoreless ball and struck out 15 batters while walking only one.
GAME 1: GSW 11, WESLEYAN 0 (5 inn.)
Hodge scored the game-winning run off the first pitch of the
game when she launched a home run over the left field fence to give
the Lady 'Canes a 1-0 lead.
RBI singles from Brooke McLemore and Buck in the second gave GSW
a 3-0 advantage.
Southwestern finished off Wesleyan in the fourth when Buck
cleared the bases with a grand slam. Ashley Harris added a RBI
single.
Mariko Nomura (two innings), Tiffany Milstid (two innings) and
Kimberlee Tolbert (one inning) combined for the shutout. Milstid
(3-0) gets the win, striking out four.
GAME 2: GSW 14, WESLEYAN 0 (5 inn.)
The Lady 'Canes would pick up where they left off to start game
2 as GSW scored six runs in the first and seven runs in the second
to put the game away early.
Hodge, Buck, Martin, Lyndie Duff and Katie Wooten had two hits
apiece for GSW. Buck and Duff hit doubles in the game. Wooten and
Hodge each collected a triple. Denny capped of the scoring in the
first with her two-run home run.
Mueller threw two innings and struck out two while walking one.
Martin (2-4) tossed three innings and struck out four for the win.
Southwestern returns to action on Friday with games against
Alabama-Huntsville and North Georgia in day 1 of the West Georgia
Invitational.
