The Georgia Southwestern softball team split a Peach Belt
Conference doubleheader at Georgia College on Tuesday afternoon at
the Peeler Complex in Milledgeville. The Lady Hurricanes dropped
the first game 6-3 and rallied for a 7-6 win in the nightcap.
The win in game 2 was Southwestern's first against GCSU since
joining the NCAA in 2006. GSW had lost seven straight
games to the Bobcats in that span and was outscored 42-15.
GAME 1: GEORGIA COLLEGE 6, GSW 3
After falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, GSW evened the
score in the top of the second when Anna Oswald cleared the bases
with a three-run triple to center.
The score remained tied until the fifth when GCSU scored two
runs. The Bobcats pushed another run across in the sixth inning to
close out the scoring.
Lady 'Canes starter Jessica Martin (1-4) took the loss in
five innings of work. Katie Mueller pitched an inning of scoreless
relief. Haley Burnett picked up the complete-game win (4-3) for
Georgia College
GSW did not have a batter finish with multiple hits in the
opener, although the Lady 'Canes outhit GCSU 6-5.
Anna Parker went 3-for-3 with four RBI, swatting a two-run home
run to left in the fifth to lead Georgia College. She also had a
two-RBI single in the three-run first inning.
GAME 2: GSW 7, GEORGIA COLLEGE 6
Southwestern put together a miraculous five-run rally in the top
of the seventh for the 7-6 win in game 2. The Lady Hurricanes
scored five on four hits and took advantage of two Bobcat errors in
the final frame.
GSW reliever Tiffany Milstid (2-0) threw the final five innings
of two-hit shutout ball for the win.
Caitlin Duvall went 4 1/3 innings of relief in the loss (0-2)
for GCSU, allowing five runs, two earned.
Lyndi Duff went 2-for-4 with a two-run double to lead
Southwestern. Gabby Buck and Cherrelle Pullen added two hits
apiece. Katie Wooten and Pullen hit doubles during the seventh
inning rally.
Lauren Potts went 2-for-4 with three-run home run in the first
inning for Georgia College. Kayla Smith and Kati Pickowitz tallied
two hits apiece.
The Lady Hurricanes are at Albany State on Wednesday for a
twinbill starting at 1 p.m.
