The Georgia Southwestern baseball team lost to #7 Columbus
State
University 16-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Hurricane Field.
The visiting Cougars scored early and often. Three first inning
walks
led to three runs. A Thomas Morrison bases-loaded single brought
two
more home for CSU in the second. GSW got on the board in the
bottom
of the frame when Byron Haynes launched a solo shot over the
left
field wall for his fifth home run of the season.
However, Columbus State answered with three more in the third, six
in
the fourth and the final two in the fifth.
The 'Canes final two runs came in the fourth.
Starter Justin Hilliard (0-1) took the loss in two innings of
work
allowing five runs - four earned - on two hits. He struck out two
and
walked five. Tyler Smith threw one inning and Blaze Hargrove saw
two
innings of action for GSW. Chris Carroll was the 'Canes final
pitcher
of the afternoon throwing two innings of scoreless relief while
allowing only one hit.
Phillip Robinson (4-1) earned the win for CSU. Robinson went
five
innings, allowed three runs - one earned - while scattering three
hits
and striking out six. Cam Fulcher pitched two innings of
scoreless
relief in his first appearance of the season.
Francisco Gomez went 2-for-4 and scored a run for the 'Canes.
Haynes
finished 1-for-3 with a walk and the solo home run. He scored
two
runs.
Rodney Rutherford led the Cougars with a 3-for-3 performance at
the
plate that included a walk. He knocked in two and scored two.
Aaron
Beasley went 3-for-5, scored a run and had a RBI. C.J. Bressoud
finished 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and he scored a run.
Cole
Martin also had a multi-hit game.
With the loss, GSW falls to 15-28 on the season. Columbus State
improves to 33-13. The 'Canes travel to Montgomery, Ala. tomorrow
to
take on Auburn University-Montgomery in a 5 p.m. contest.
