VALDOSTA, Ga. – The #13 Valdosta State University softball
team scored their most runs in a game against Georgia Southwestern
on Monday night at the softball complex. The Lady Blazers defeated
the Hurricanes 14-4 in the first game and won 13-0 in game two,
their ninth shutout of the season.
Brianna Collis picked up her eighth win of the year, allowing five
hits and no walks while striking out three in five innings.
The Lady Blazers (25-3, 6-0) put two runs on the board in the first
inning when Shannon Cleland reached on an error by the second
baseman and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Telecia Ramsey.
Robin Williams stepped up to the plate, grabbing her seventh
homerun of the season.
In the second inning, Tiffany Burks led off with a double down the
left field line followed by a double from Collis, earning an
RBI.
Georgia Southwestern (8-26) came alive in the third inning with a
Pratt single to left field followed by an Oglesby single to the
pitcher. Reneau tripled to left field, scoring two runs and Long
homered to left field scoring two more runs.
VSU did not trail for very long, tying the game up in the fourth
inning with an Amy Gaiss single to right center. Audrey Massingill
pinch ran for Gaiss, scoring later in the inning on a passed
ball.
The Lady Blazers put on a hitting display in the fifth inning.
Chantrele Edwards led off with a walk and stole second followed by
another walk by Cleland. Ramsey singled and Alex Acosta stepped up
to the plate, hitting a grand slam. VSU's run was not over
when Williams reached on a throwing error by the third baseman.
Collis walked and Ely reached first on a fielder's choice,
leaving all runners safe. Edwards singled up the middle, driving in
two runs while Cleland doubled to left center, scoring another run.
Ramsey hit her first homerun of the year, scoring three
RBI's. The game was called after five innings.
VSU had nine hits in 25 at bats with 13 RBI's, scoring the
most runs they have scored all season.
Milsted received the loss for the Hurricanes, giving up six hits
and two walks while striking out four.
The Lady Blazers were first to score in game two, starting with a
Ramsey single down the left field line. Ramsey stole second and
Acosta singled to right field. Williams's sac fly scored one
run while Gaiss hit her fourth homer of the year, scoring two more
runs.
Putting five more runs on the board in the second inning, VSU took
an 8-0 lead after two innings. Massingill led off the second with a
single up the middle followed by a Kelsey Case single through the
left side. Ashley Mayhue's grounder to the short stop scored
Massingill while Cleland's single through the right side
scored Case. Ramsey walked and Williams doubled to left field,
scoring one run. Gaiss followed with another double scoring two
runs.
VSU was not done there, scoring another five runs in the fourth
inning. Cleland had another single through the left side and Ramsey
reached first when she was hit by a pitch. Acosta walked and
Mackenzie Heban received an RBI with a sac fly to right field.
Massingill received her first homerun of the season, a grand slam,
to left center.
Ashley Hill picked up her fifth win, with a no-hitter and only
allowing one walk and striking out six.
Valdosta State had 10 hits in 20 at bats with three walks and no
strike outs.
Howett received the loss for the Hurricanes, giving up eight hits
and one walk.
Lady Canes (8-28 overall, 2-14 PBC) will next host Albany State on
Saturday, March 31.
