VALDOSTA, Ga. – Freshman
Haley Solan turned in a top-25 finish in her collegiate debut Friday evening to lead the Georgia Southwestern State University women's cross country team at the VSU Border Clash.
Storms in the area delayed the start of the race by approximately 20 minutes and left runners to contend with soggy conditions and a light rain that continued throughout the 5K.
Solan navigated the wet course in 23:45.5 to finish 21st overall and pace the Lady Hurricanes. She was one of three GSW runners making their collegiate debuts, joining freshmen
Mary Tilghman and
Molly Flynn.
Tilghman was the second Lady Hurricane across the line, finishing 36th in 26:18.6. Sophomore
Crystal Lance followed in 40th with a time of 28:03.8, while junior
Sonja Bernacki placed 41st in 28:34.8. Flynn rounded out the GSW scoring five in her first collegiate race, finishing 42nd in 28:36.4.
GSW finished fifth in the six-team field with 138 points, posting a combined time of 2:15:19 and an average of 27:03. The Lady Hurricanes edged Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College by two points for fifth place.
Flagler won the team title with 21 points, followed by host Valdosta State with 40. Central Florida finished third with 93 points and Enterprise State Community College was fourth with 98.
