JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Georgia Southwestern State University women's soccer controlled the shot count and mounted a late charge Wednesday afternoon, but a pair of first-half goals proved costly as Edward Waters University held on for a 2-1 victory at Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium.
Charlotte Reynolds scored her first goal of the season in the 79th minute to pull the Lady Hurricanes (1-2-3) within one before GSW put five more shots on goal over the final eight minutes in search of the equalizer.
GSW finished with a 14-2 advantage in shots and put eight attempts on goal. Edward Waters (4-3-1) managed just two shots all afternoon, but both found the back of the net, while the Tigers were held without a shot in the second half.
The Lady Hurricanes generated the majority of the opportunities from the start.
Ines Balaghni and
Jordin Gundin each attempted shots in the opening nine minutes before GSW earned a pair of corner kicks midway through the first half.
Sydney Weslowski added back-to-back attempts in the 34th and 35th minutes, but Edward Waters made its first shot of the afternoon count when Rose-Bertude Rosinvil scored at the 35:57 mark to put the Tigers in front.
Rosinvil struck again less than five minutes later, scoring at 40:26 to give Edward Waters a 2-0 advantage on just its second shot of the match. The Tigers would not attempt another shot the rest of the afternoon.
GSW had an opportunity to cut into the deficit before halftime after drawing a foul in the box, but EWU goalkeeper Solange Brown stopped Weslowski's penalty kick in the 42nd minute.
The Lady Hurricanes continued to apply pressure after the break while keeping the Tigers from generating another shot.
Cassidy Brunner put an attempt on frame in the 63rd minute before GSW finally broke through at the 78:09 mark. Balaghni set up Reynolds, who found the back of the net to trim the deficit to 2-1.
Reynolds became the sixth different Lady Hurricane to score this season, while Balaghni became the sixth GSW player to record an assist. The Lady Hurricanes have scored eight goals with seven assists through their first six matches.
GSW continued to press for the equalizer following Reynolds' goal.
Zoie St. John forced a save from Gabrielle Hatch in the 83rd minute, and
Anna Wheatley followed with another shot on goal in the 86th.

Riley Pearson and
Maci Dunlap each put attempts on frame over the final four minutes, but Hatch stopped all three to preserve the one-goal margin.
GSW outshot Edward Waters 7-0 in the second half and finished with an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Lady Hurricanes also held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Hannah Garrett played the opening 45 minutes in goal for GSW before
Alana Beddow took over after halftime. Beddow and the Lady Hurricane defense did not allow a shot over the final 45 minutes.
Wednesday marked the second all-time meeting between the programs and GSW's first trip to Edward Waters. The Lady Hurricanes won the inaugural meeting in Americus in 2021.
