MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – A weekend that began with frustration ultimately ended with a much-needed breakthrough for Georgia Southwestern, as the Lady Hurricanes closed out their Peach Belt Conference series with a 7-3 victory over Georgia College to snap a 12-game losing streak.
GSW had entered the weekend with momentum at the Bobcat Softball Field — having won five of the previous six meetings there — but found itself chasing early in the first two games before finally flipping the script in the finale.
Weekend's Top Performers
- Erin Garland – 5-for-10, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 3 R, SB
- Rebecca Hazard – 4-for-8, 2B, 2 RBI
- Madison Banks – 4-for-10, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R, SB
- Maggie McDonald – 3-for-7, 2B, 2 R
- Pyper McCard – Complete-game win in finale (7 IP, 3 ER)
Game 1 set a difficult tone, as Georgia College struck for five runs in the opening inning and never looked back in a 9-1 run-rule decision. The Lady Hurricanes managed just three hits, with an RBI single from
Rebecca Hazard accounting for the lone run, while
Erin Garland and
Maggie McDonald each added doubles.
The second game followed a similar pattern early, with GSW falling behind before mounting a response. Trailing 3-0, the Hurricanes broke through in the fifth inning, stringing together five hits to tie the game. Garland delivered a two-run single, and
Madison Banks followed with an RBI knock to even things at 3-3.
However, Georgia College answered immediately in the bottom half and added an insurance run in the sixth to secure a 5-3 win, handing GSW its 12th consecutive loss despite the mid-game surge.
The finale, though, told a different story.
After falling behind 3-0 through four innings, the Hurricanes erupted for five runs in the fifth, turning the game—and the weekend—on its head. GSW pieced together five hits in the frame, highlighted by RBI swings from Garland, Banks, and
Kendall Huelsman, to take a 5-3 lead.
That momentum held.
Behind a steady complete-game effort in the circle, the Lady Hurricanes kept Georgia College off the board the rest of the way while adding two more insurance runs in the seventh. Huelsman delivered a sacrifice fly before
Peyton Namyslowski added an RBI single to cap the scoring.
Banks led the offensive charge in the finale with three hits and two runs scored, while Garland continued her strong weekend with another multi-hit effort and an RBI. Hazard also chipped in two hits as GSW finished with 13 knocks in the win.
In the circle, McCard (4-7) worked all seven innings, limiting the damage after the early deficit and stranding multiple scoring threats to secure the victory.
