JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University women's tennis team battled to the very end Tuesday afternoon but came up just short in a 4-3 loss at Edward Waters University.
In a series that has proven nothing short of dramatic, all three all-time meetings between the two programs have now been decided by identical 4-3 scores — with the home team emerging victorious each time.
GSW found early momentum in doubles play as
Luiza Rodrigues and
Luana Borini delivered a dominant 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. The pairing has now won back-to-back matches together, continuing to establish themselves as a reliable duo for the Lady Hurricanes. However, Edward Waters claimed the other two courts to secure the doubles point.
Rodrigues continued her strong play into singles, highlighting the afternoon for GSW with a resilient three-set victory at No. 1. After dropping the opening set, she rallied to take the second before pulling away in a match-deciding super tiebreak. The win marked her second straight singles victory and completed a perfect day across both singles and doubles competition.
Mabry Bowron added a straight-sets win at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-3), while
Natalia Paiva fought through a back-and-forth battle at No. 5 singles, rebounding from a first-set loss to force a deciding tiebreak and secure the point for the Hurricanes.
Despite the trio of singles victories, Edward Waters answered with wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles to clinch the match.
GSW drops to 1-4 on the season following its third consecutive narrow 4-3 contest in the series, while Edward Waters improves to 4-10 overall.
