AMERICUS, Ga. — Georgia Southwestern State University junior Juan Velásquez has been named the Peach Belt Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Monday, following a fourth-place finish at The National Preview against a field featuring some of the nation's top NCAA Division II programs.
Velásquez carded a 7-under-par 209 over three rounds at PGA National Resort's The Champion Course, climbing six spots on the individual leaderboard Tuesday with a final-round 66. His closing round featured six birdies and an eagle as he helped the sixth-ranked Hurricanes secure a runner-up finish in the 10-team tournament.
After opening with rounds of 73 and 70, Velásquez saved his best for last, firing a 6-under 66 to finish fourth among 57 competitors. His performance came against a field that included six teams ranked in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll, including No. 1 Florida Southern and No. 8 Nova Southeastern.
Led by Velásquez, Georgia Southwestern turned in a record-setting performance during Tuesday's final round. The Hurricanes combined for a program-record 19-under-par 269, helping GSW secure second place in the team standings.
A native of Bucaramanga, Colombia, Velásquez transferred to Georgia Southwestern from Michigan State University and is competing in his first season with the Hurricanes.
Velásquez becomes the fourth different GSW golfer to earn PBC Golfer of the Week honors since March, joining Sam Brown (March 2), Jordan Jones (March 23) and Sacha Corlouër (April 6). The recognition continues an impressive stretch of individual accolades for the nationally ranked Hurricanes.
