Grady's PK Save Highlights Narrow Homecoming Loss to UNG

AMERICUS, Ga. – Georgia Southwestern State University controlled possession and outshot the University of North Georgia on Saturday evening, but an early goal proved to be the difference as the Nighthawks escaped Hurricane Field with a 1-0 Peach Belt Conference men's soccer victory before a Homecoming crowd of 1,001.

The Hurricanes (3-7-4, 0-5-4 PBC) held 60 percent of the possession, finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots and earned five corner kicks to North Georgia's three, but were unable to break through against the Nighthawks (9-2-5, 5-2-4 PBC).

GSW came out attacking and nearly grabbed the lead in the opening minute. Mac Vargas put a shot toward the bottom-right corner just 43 seconds after kickoff, forcing North Georgia goalkeeper Miguel Pineda into an early save. The Hurricanes followed with corner kicks in the first two minutes.

Despite the early pressure, North Georgia struck first at 5:08 when Rhys Shirley converted a feed from Max Garnett to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

The Hurricanes continued to create opportunities throughout the opening half. Juan Franco and Sam Bruns generated attempts in the 16th and 17th minutes, while Dante Johnson added a shot in the 30th.

GSW came close to equalizing moments later when Will Eydam put an attempt toward the bottom-right corner at 30:22, but Pineda made the save. Bruns followed with another shot on frame just over two minutes later, forcing the North Georgia goalkeeper into his third stop of the half.

The Hurricanes carried a 9-6 advantage in shots into halftime but trailed 1-0 on the scoreboard.

North Georgia had an opportunity to double its lead in the 55th minute after being awarded a penalty kick, but GSW goalkeeper Nathan Grady turned away Isaac Calderon's attempt to keep the Hurricanes within striking distance.

GSW looked to capitalize on the momentum as Theo Hoang, Bryan Garcia and Jose Monteagudo generated shots over the next nine minutes. Garcia put an attempt toward the bottom-left corner in the 66th minute, but Pineda made the save to preserve the shutout.

The Hurricanes continued to press for the equalizer, with Johnson adding another attempt in the 73rd minute. North Georgia threatened on the counterattack late, but Grady stopped Calderon's shot toward the bottom-right corner in the 83rd minute to keep the deficit at one.

GSW was unable to find the tying goal in the closing minutes as the Nighthawks held on for the narrow victory.

The Hurricanes finished with 14 shots, including four on goal, while North Georgia recorded 11 attempts with five on frame. GSW also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Bruns, Garcia, Vargas, Johnson and Sean Carlos Rivera led the Hurricanes with two shots apiece. Grady played all 90 minutes in goal and made four saves, including the second-half penalty kick stop. Pineda finished with four saves for North Georgia.

Saturday's result marked the seventh victory for North Georgia in the last eight meetings between the programs. The Nighthawks scored just once in each of the two matchups this season, having played GSW to a 1-1 draw Sept. 23 in Dahlonega.
