Hurricanes Rally Late to Beat Augusta, Extend Win Streak to Six

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Georgia Southwestern State University women's basketball team showed composure on the road Saturday afternoon, closing with a dominant fourth quarter to defeat Augusta University 59-54 inside Christenberry Fieldhouse. Junior Ray'ven Robinson led all scorers with 19 points, and reigning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week Shane' Jackson delivered her second double-double of the season as the Lady Hurricanes notched their sixth straight win and eighth victory in their last nine meetings with the Jaguars.

Slow Start, Steady Response

The Hurricanes (6-2, 2-0 PBC) absorbed an early Augusta surge as the Jaguars opened the afternoon hitting seven of their first 14 shots and taking a 19-11 lead after the first quarter.

GSW's bench steadied the game in the second, led by Jackson's early burst. The junior forward scored eight points in the period and powered GSW's 17-point quarter that erased the deficit and gave the Hurricanes a 28-25 halftime lead.

Jackson was everywhere: rebounding in traffic, running the floor, and converting three straight baskets during a key stretch that flipped momentum firmly toward the Blue & Gold.

Augusta Pushes Back

The Jaguars clawed back in the third quarter, capitalizing on GSW turnovers and cold shooting to reclaim a 41-36 lead entering the fourth. Augusta made 8-of-10 at the foul line in the period and took advantage of the Hurricanes' slowest offensive frame of the afternoon.

But even while the shots weren't falling, the GSW defense kept the game within reach — setting the stage for another poised closing act.

Fourth Quarter Takeover

As they have multiple times during their six-game winning streak, the Lady Hurricanes saved their sharpest basketball for the final 10 minutes.

GSW opened the fourth on a 13-3 run, highlighted by a pair of Jackson layups — both assisted by Robinson — and a momentum-swinging corner three from Tiara Hozumi.

Robinson took over late, scoring eight points in the quarter, including back-to-back layups to push the Hurricanes ahead 55-49 with two minutes left. Her drive-and-kick assist to Hannah Simmons for a three moments earlier had snapped a tie and turned the tide for good.

Jackson, Robinson, Simmons, and Kassidy Neal combined for all 23 of GSW's fourth-quarter points. Neal delivered the dagger on an offensive rebound put-back with 16 seconds remaining, making it a two-possession game before Madison Brittle iced it at the line.

Efficiency Everywhere

Despite an up-and-down offensive rhythm, the Hurricanes delivered in the important moments:
  • Shot 69.2% (9-for-13) in the fourth quarter
  • Finished 54.5% from the field for the game
  • Outscored Augusta 23-13 in the final period
  • Held the Jaguars to 21.4% shooting in the fourth
  • Bench contributed 23 points, led by Jackson's 13 and Simmons' 8
Jackson closed with a dominant 13 points, 15 rebounds, two steals and a block, anchoring GSW at both ends across 30 impactful minutes. Brittle added six points, six rebounds, five assists, while Simmons tallied eight points, four assists, and the go-ahead bucket in the third.
