AMERICUS, Ga. — Georgia Southwestern protected its home floor once again Wednesday night, grinding out a 66-60 overtime victory over Clayton State inside the Storm Dome to remain perfect at home this season (4-0) and move to 3-1 in Peach Belt Conference play.
In a game that featured seven ties, eight lead changes, and another extra-session finish between the two programs, the Hurricanes leaned on composure and physicality late — closing overtime on a decisive run to secure their fourth win in the last five meetings with the Lakers.
Back-and-Forth Battle Sets the Tone
Neither team found much separation across regulation. GSW held slim advantages after each of the first three quarters, using balanced scoring and strong interior play to counter Clayton State's defensive pressure.
The Hurricanes carried a 43-37 lead into the fourth quarter, but Clayton State responded with its best stretch of the night, knotting the game at 45-45 midway through the frame and eventually pushing ahead before GSW answered late.
With seconds remaining in regulation and the score tied at 56, Clayton State had two final looks in the paint, but the Hurricanes held firm to force overtime — the second overtime game in the last four meetings between the teams.
Neal Powers Overtime Push
Once the extra period began, Georgia Southwestern seized control.
Kassidy Neal, who posted her second double-double of the season, delivered in the biggest moments. Neal scored six of her 17 points in overtime, finishing 8 of 11 from the field while pulling down 12 rebounds to anchor the Hurricanes on both ends.
After Clayton State briefly tied the game at 59, Neal converted a putback and followed with a pair of free throws to swing momentum back to GSW. The Hurricanes then sealed the game at the line, outscoring the Lakers 10-4 in overtime.
Johnson Sparks the Offense
Janiya Johnson provided timely perimeter shooting throughout the night, knocking down four three-pointers and finishing with 15 points. Her three early in overtime gave GSW its first cushion of the extra session and ignited the Storm Dome crowd.
Ray'ven Robinson added nine points, four rebounds, and three steals, while
Shane' Jackson chipped in eight points and 13 rebounds, giving GSW a strong presence on the glass.
Defense and Discipline Down the Stretch
The Hurricanes won the rebounding battle 54-35 and held Clayton State to 30 percent shooting, including just 1 of 8 from beyond the arc. GSW was able to overcome 35 turnovers which came primarily from Clayton State full-court pressure, but also forced 16 turnovers, turning them into critical stops late as the Lakers managed just one field goal in overtime.
With the win, Georgia Southwestern improves to 7-3 overall, stays unbeaten at home, and continues to build momentum in conference play.
