Hurricanes Deliver on Historic Night

AMERICUS, Ga. -- The Georgia Southwestern State University men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season after two late scores pushed the Hurricanes past Brewton-Parker College,  2-0, on Wednesday in the first night match at Hurricane Field in program history.

It took until the 80th minute for GSW to break a scoreless match, but Matheus Alves followed up a shot by Dylan Marshall that had deflected off the the Brewton-Parker goalkeeper and tapped it inside the left pipe for a goal, his third of the season. The school-record 611 fans in attendance watched Caleb Zolman run down a pass along the left side from Chris Avery five minutes later and take it in for the score, the first of his collegiate career.

The Hurricanes improved their record to 1-1-1 this season while Brewton-Parker dropped to 2-2. In a back-and-forth series between the two schools, GSW regains the advantage, 5-4-1, since joining the NCAA in 2006.

GSW outshot the Barons, 13-7, in the match, with a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. GSW held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks and Brewton-Parker committed three more fouls (9-6). Goalkeeper Francesco Bazzano turned in his first clean sheet of the fall.

Up Next: The Hurricanes hit the road for a 4 p.m. match at Pensacola Christian College on Saturday.
