A Little Mendsen Magic Applied In Loss

AMERICUS - Sophomore Daniel Mendsen punched in his first collegiate goal for the Georgia Southwestern men's soccer team on Saturday afternoon but the Hurricanes suffered a 5-1 setback against Francis Marion in Peach Belt Conference action at Hurricane Field.

Southwestern dropped its seventh straight match to fall to 1-10-2 overall, 0-7-1 in the PBC, while Francis Marion improved its mark to 10-4-1 and 5-3 in conference play.

Quick strikes from FMU's Levin Sandmann put the Hurricanes in an insurmountable early deficit. Sandmann scored in the 13th minute and again 10 minutes later to put the Patriots ahead, 2-0.

Harrison Smith followed up his own rebound in the 27th minute to round out the first half scoring and give FMU a three-goal advantage.

Sven Rickie earned his second assist of the match for FMU when he set up Gael Mabiala for a header off a corner kick in the 47th minute.

Trailing 4-0, Mendsen struck at the 77:02 mark by following up Brennan Bauschka's deflected shot off an indirect kick in the box.

Andrew Kephart tallied the final score of the afternoon by converting a penalty kick less than a minute after the Mendsen score.

The Patriots finished with 16-3 shots on goal advantage and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Starting goalkeeper Garrett Blamire saved seven for GSW before turning things over to Joshua Swift for the final 39 minutes. Swift turned away four shots. Jonathan Mannes stopped two for FMU.

The Hurricanes return to action on Monday when they travel to USC Aiken for a 6 p.m. PBC match.
