Craig Hughes and Martyn Bell teamed up three times Tuesday night
to lead the Lander men's soccer team to a 5-0 quarterfinal victory
over GSW in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.
The Hurricanes finish the season at 3-15.
Hughes scored the game-winner on a header just 10:23 into the
contest on an assist from Bell. The Bearcats stretched the margin
to 2-0 when Hughes netted a long pass from Bell at 34:03. On Bell's
third assist to Hughes at 47:36 he tied the PBC tournament record
for assists in a game.
Ivan Stoykov scored Lander's other two goals, the first on an
assist from Jamie Davison at 77:32, and the second on an assist
from Adam Arthur at 79:40.
Lander outshot the Hurricanes, 21-4, and led in corner kicks,
7-1.
GSW goalkeeper Michael Smith was credited with three saves,
while Lander's Scott Playle had two.
The Hurricanes finished 2008 with the fewest goals allowed (42),
lowest goals against average (2.31) and best save
percentage (0.682) in a season in the five-year history of the
program.
