GREENWOOD, S.C. - Aaron Brittain scored an
early goal and the Lander Bearcats held on to their lead the final
75 minutes, edging GSW 1-0 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer
match Saturday afternoon.
Brittain scored at the 14:35 mark off an assist from K.C. Dunbaker.
Brittain's goal came on a rebound after Hurricanes freshman
goalkeeper Michael Smith made a diving stop of Dunbaker's shot from
the right side. The ball bounced off Smith's hands to Brittain, who
pounded the ball into the back of the net for his ninth goal of the
season.
The Bearcats had several other scoring chances the rest of the
game, but couldn't put the match away. The game ended with Lander
goalkeeper Scott Playle batting senior Christian Dane's cross away
as the final horn sounded.
The Bearcats had a 15-4 edge in shots with Smith making four saves.
Playle recorded no saves, recording a shutout in his first career
start.
Lander improved to 8-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the Peach Belt. The
Hurricanes fell to 1-10, 0-2.
