MORROW, Ga. - GSW came up short in their bid to
knock off the Peach Belt Conference's second place team in
thrilling 1-0 double-overtime match with Clayton State on Saturday
afternoon at Laker Field.
The Hurricanes defense stifled Clayton State (8-4-2, 3-0-2 PBC) for
all of regulation and the first overtime period. However, in
the 104th minute, CSU's Stephen Behan sent a cross over the defense
to a waiting Leighton Fredericks on the backside of the penalty
box. Fredericks hammered home the game-winner - his ninth goal of
the season and fifth game-winner of the season.
Although Clayton State outshot GSW 18-5, the Lakers could never
get a clear shot on the goal until the game-winner.
GSW goalkeeper John Scharnikow stopped five. Laker goalie
David Cristofoli recorded the shutout with one save.
Derek Schicker led the 'Canes offense with two shots,
while Jamie Kiep had the lone GSW shot on goal.
The Hurricanes (3-12, 1-3) are back in action on Saturday
(October 25) hosting UNC Pembroke at 3:30 p.m.
