Lady Canes Set Program Record With Fifth Draw of Season

AMERICUS, Ga. – Georgia Southwestern State University and the University of South Carolina Beaufort battled through 90 scoreless minutes Saturday evening as the Lady Hurricanes set a program record with their fifth draw of the season following a 0-0 decision at Hurricane Field.

GSW (1-3-5, 0-1-3 PBC) finished with a 7-6 advantage in shots and came inches away from breaking the deadlock early in the second half, while goalkeeper Alana Beddow made three saves against the Sand Sharks (5-5-1, 1-3-1 PBC) to add to her program-leading career shutout total.

The Lady Hurricanes generated the first two opportunities of the match as Taelyn Townsend and Jordin Gundin sent attempts off target during the opening 10 minutes.

USCB answered with its first dangerous chances midway through the half. Beddow turned away Isabella Franco's attempt toward the top-right corner in the 18th minute and stopped Kitty Crovo four minutes later to keep the match scoreless.

GSW produced its best opportunity of the opening half in the 32nd minute when Anna Wheatley put a shot toward the bottom-right corner, forcing a save from USCB goalkeeper Graysen Asher.

The Lady Hurricanes came out of halftime on the attack. Riley Pearson put a shot on frame just 17 seconds into the second period, but Asher made the save.

GSW came even closer in the 54th minute. Maci Dunlap's attempt struck the left post, and Cassidy Brunner followed with a shot just five seconds later that sailed high.

USCB responded with three attempts over the next 15 minutes, including another shot on goal from Franco that Beddow stopped in the 52nd minute. The Sand Sharks also generated three consecutive corner kicks during a stretch of pressure in the 68th and 69th minutes, but the GSW defense held firm.

Townsend provided another opportunity for the Lady Hurricanes in the 81st minute, but neither side was able to find the breakthrough over the closing minutes.

GSW finished with seven shots to USCB's six, while the Sand Sharks held a 3-2 edge in shots on goal and a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks. Seven different Lady Hurricanes recorded a shot.

Beddow played all 90 minutes in goal and stopped all three shots she faced for the clean sheet. Asher made two saves for USCB.

Saturday's scoreless draw was the fifth tie of the season for GSW, establishing a new single-season program record. The Lady Hurricanes have scored just one goal in five all-time meetings with USC Beaufort.
