Lady Braves stifle Georgia Southwestern,
53-46
Shooting only 25 percent from the floor for the game, Georgia
Southwestern was held to a season-low 46 points as UNC Pembroke
emerged with a 53-46 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Storm
Dome.
GSW struck first to start the game but, after five lead changes
in the first 10 minutes, UNCP went on a 9-1 run to build a seven
point cushion (18-11) with just seven minutes left in the period.
The Lady Hurricanes responded with six unanswered points to come
within one point, but the Lady Braves managed to go into the
halftime break up 25-19. GSW connected on 7-of-31 shots in the
first stanza.
In a game filled with turnovers by both teams (41 total),
Southwestern was able to hang around in the second half and
eventually tie the score at 41-41 with 7:04 remaining.
However, UNCP went on an 8-0 run over the next four minutes and
would hold on for the win.
Nadirah Gardner led a trio of Lady Hurricanes in double figures
with a game-high 13 points. She also pulled down a team-high seven
rebounds. Brandi Burris and Whitley Wiltz added 10 points apiece
for Southwestern.
JaToya Kemp tallied 10 points to lead UNCP, while Lavantay
Johnson registered nine points.
The Lady 'Canes are back in action at the Storm Dome on
Monday night for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with Columbus State.

UNC Pembroke holds off GSW,
74-67
UNC Pembroke picked up their first Peach Belt Conference win of
the season with a 74-67 victory over Georgia Southwestern on
Saturday afternoon at the Storm Dome.
Neither team was able to distance themselves in the first half
as the game was tied on five different occasions over the first 12
minutes. UNCP went on a 7-0 run to take a 30-22 lead with
3:20 left in the first stanza. Their advantage was five at the half
(36-31).
Pembroke (4-10, 1-6 PBC) built the lead to 16 over the first 10
minutes of the second period. An 8-0 run by GSW brought the
'Canes to within seven with just over six minutes
remaining.
Southwestern (6-8, 2-5 PBC) would manage to shave the UNCP lead
to four on a Chris Rawls layup with just over a minute to play, but
that's as close as GSW would get and the Braves would pick up the
road win.
Shooting only 2-of-16 from beyond the arc for the game,
Southwestern was unable to hit key shots when needed.
Rawls led the Hurricanes with game-high 22 points on 7-of-11
shooting from the floor and an 8-of-9 night from the free throw
line. Anthony Sargent added 16.
Cortez Brown led four Braves in double figures with 19 points.
Demarcus Lyday added 17 and David Moore and Brandon Thomas posted
double-doubles with 12 points and 12 rebounds and 10 points and 11
rebounds, respectively.
The Hurricanes are back in action at the Storm Dome on Monday
night for a 7:30 p.m. tilt with Columbus State.
