AMERICUS, Ga. — For Georgia Southwestern's student-athletes, competition is only part of the story.
This April, that story stretched beyond fields, courts and courtside benches and into the heart of the Americus community, as Hurricanes athletes traded uniforms for work gloves during The Big Event.
Across multiple days of service, student-athletes joined hundreds of volunteers in a campus-wide effort centered on one goal: giving back. Partnering with the Fuller Center for Housing and local organizations, Georgia Southwestern helped build a home for a deserving family—turning teamwork into something tangible that will last far beyond a single season.
But for those wearing Navy and Gold, the impact wasn't measured in wins or losses.
It was measured in something bigger.
"Anytime we get a chance to represent GSW off the field, it means something," said Sam Bruns, GSW Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president. "This is about more than us. It's about being part of something that changes someone's life."
Throughout the week, Hurricanes student-athletes took on a variety of roles—painting, lifting, organizing materials, and working side-by-side with teammates, classmates, and community members. No prior experience was needed—just a willingness to serve.
That willingness is at the core of what The Big Event represents.
Designed as a large-scale service initiative, the event aims to connect students more deeply with the community around them—teaching leadership, teamwork and social responsibility through hands-on experience.
For student-athletes, those lessons feel familiar.
The same communication and trust required to execute under pressure in competition translated seamlessly to the job site. Whether working in small groups or tackling larger tasks, athletes leaned on the same chemistry that fuels their success in competition—only this time, the scoreboard looked a little different.
Instead of runs, sets, or strokes, the progress came in framed walls, fresh paint and shared purpose.
The Big Event has quickly become a signature tradition at Georgia Southwestern, bringing together students, faculty, staff and community partners in a unified effort to serve Americus. What began as an ambitious idea has grown into a powerful annual display of collaboration and impact.
And for GSW student-athletes, it's a reminder of their role beyond athletics.
The Georgia Southwestern athletics mission emphasizes developing leaders, citizens and professionals—not just competitors. Events like this reinforce that commitment, offering student-athletes the opportunity to lead through action and service.
By the end of the week, the results were clear.
A house closer to becoming a home.
A community strengthened.
And a group of student-athletes who left just as much of an impact off the field as they do on it.
Because at Georgia Southwestern, being a Hurricane means more than competing.
It means showing up—wherever you're needed most.
