Season Opens With Runner-Up Finish

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The fifth-ranked Georgia Southwestern men's golf team posted a 4-over-par 292 in the final round of the Bearcat Fall Invitational on Tuesday to finish in second place out of 15 teams. The tournament, hosted by Lander University, was played at the par-72, 7,073-yard Forest Hills Golf Club and featured eight programs ranked in the top 25 of NCAA Division II according to the latest Golf Coaches Association of America rankings.

Garrett Giles led the Hurricanes with his third consecutive round of 1-under to finish tied for sixth in the 84-player field with a 213. Chase McLain dropped three strokes behind Giles overall after carding a 76 on Tuesday. Nicolas Escobar continued his climb up the leaderboard after struggling in the opening round. Escobar matched Giles with a 71 on Tuesday and climbed 15 spots to finish tied for 16th. Jack Tharrington matched Escobar with a 2-over 218 for the week. Erik Fogel was two strokes back at 220. 

The Hurricanes posted the third-lowest round of the day, but it wasn't enough to hold off No. 6 North Georgia. The Nighthawks overcame a nine-stroke deficit to pass GSW and win the event by two strokes. No. 8 Limestone took third place, seven strokes behind GSW. North Georgia's Noah Zediker carded a 72 in the final round to hang on for a one stroke victory in the individual standings with a 6-under.

Next up for the Hurricanes is the University of North Georgia's Mizuno Intercollegiate at Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Ga., on Monday.
