CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Georgia Southwestern women's cross country team made its first-ever appearance at the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional on Saturday morning and finished in 22nd place out of 31 teams. Freshman Daria Woods led the Lady Hurricanes with a time of 25:25 on the 6k course.
Woods finished in 104th place overall out of 211 competitors. A strong back half of the race allowed her to climb 19 spots from her position at the 3k mark.
Linda Esparza crossed the finish line second for GSW with a time of 25:52, good for 116th place, while Jessi Young was the third GSW runner across the line in 26:04. Young, GSW's top runner all season long, was battling an illness on race day and her stamina suffered as she dropped 21 places over the final half of Saturday's event.
Lisa Espino crossed the finish line one second and one place behind Young with a time of 26:05. Raven Martin took 152nd place in 27:04 and Mikaela Shimko posted a time of 28:35.
With 75 points, Wingate University finished ahead of Peach Belt Conference Champions Flagler College (107), for the team title. The PBC placed four teams in the top five of the regional.
Hannah Witt from King University crossed the finish line first overall with a time of 21:46.
