AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern women's cross country team is back in action this weekend in Albany. Skiles Farm will play host to the Darton Invitational, hosted by Darton College.
The team has had a couple weeks off from competition. Head coach Stephen Cox says, "The girls have been working their tails off these last few weeks. It will be good to get back on track and keep preparing for the Peach Belt Championships in Aiken toward the end of October."
The team finished ninth place in the PBC Championships last year which marked the best finish in programs history since the transition to NCAA Division II status.
Coach Cox continued, "We're making plans to continue to work to accomplish team goals. We can't control how other teams prepare, but we can control ours. The girls need to continue to work to improve their level of fitness."
Lisa Espino has paced the Lady 'Canes in the last two races. Kelsey Baker, Micah Buchar and local product, Mollie McGowan have all battled and look to pace the 'Canes.
In the team's previous meet, the team finished in seventh place out of nine teams at the Second Annual GSW Remembrance Run held on Saturday, Sept. 10. Lisa Espino led the Lady Hurricanes for the second-consecutive meet, finishing the 5K course in 22:11 for 25th place out of 70 competitors.
Freshman Micah Bucher followed for GSW in 29th place with a 22:30 time and Kelsey Baker took 39th at 23:29.
They race this weekend in Albany and next weekend in Jacksonville, Ala. at Jacksonville State University. For directions to the races contact the XC office at (229) 931-2221.
