Falcons Soar Over the Storm

Montevallo, Ala. – The Lady Hurricanes were on the road for a mid-week game against Peach Belt Conference opponent Montevallo. The Montevallo Falcons took the lead in the second half and held on for the remainder of the game in a 60-55 finish.

The Lady Hurricanes move onto a 6-7, 1-5 PBC record. The University of Montevallo's women's basketball team improves to 5-9, 2-5 PBC.

The Lady 'Canes started off strong in the first seconds of the game with Shatoria Hudson  making the first bucket of the game. The first three buckets for the Lady 'Canes came from Hudson. By 16:19, Montevallo was in the lead 7-6. However, the Lady 'Canes went on a 8-1 run on the Falcons finishing with a free throw by Hudson. The largest lead for the Lady 'Canes came at 5:58, with a 10 point lead, from a jump shot by Hudson. The Falcons came back to even up the game at half with a score 28-28.

Turnovers were the name of the game in the first half.  Montevallo committed 11 turnover compared to GSW's seven. The Lady Hurricanes were able to find seven steals compared to Montevallo's two. Hudson and Jasmine McSwain led the Lady 'Canes scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the half.

Although GSW received the first point in the half, the Falcons pulled away with a 11-1 run over the Lady 'Canes. Hudson ended the scoring intermission with a free throw at 12:38. Followed later by Shaniece Sheffield with an old fashion three-point play. Between Danisha Green, Shanedra Lockett, Tanyetta Hill, and McSwain the Lady 'Canes were able to bring the score within five points over the last five minutes of the game. The final score of the game showed Montevallo winning 60-55. 

Although the Falcons had more turnovers (27-18), the difference in the game was based on the rebounds. The Falcons grabbed more rebounds than the Lady Hurricanes (49-42).

Hudson was the big player for the Lady Hurricanes with 16 points, six rounds, one assist, three steals, and two big blocks.

Montevallo's Taylor Beverly was the highest scorer for the game with a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds.

The Lady Hurricanes are back at home on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 1:30 to play against PBC opponent Flagler College.
