GSW Lady 'Cane Basketball Tips off 2012-13 season

GSW Lady 'Cane Basketball Tips off 2012-13 season

AMERICUS, Ga - The new look Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricanes head to Pensacola, Florida, Friday to tip off the 2012-13 campaign at the McDonald Fleming Moorhead Tip-Off Classic.

Along with the Hurricanes, the classic includes host University of West Florida, Barry University, and the University of Southern Indiana.

Georgia Southwestern comes into the season with momentum but also several question marks. The Lady 'Canes return only two players from last year's squad that achieved the best regular season record, 19-8, and Peachbelt Conference record, 10-7, in GSW's NCAA era.

The Returners:

5'10 senior forward Briana Jones returns to anchor the Hurricane's front line. Jones started five games last season averaging 6.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game in 14 minutes of action. The other newcomer, 5'5 sophomore guard Kelli Morrow, played sparingly last year but looks to add experience to a back court that includes several newcomers.

The Newcomers:

6'0 forward Kabrina Merriweather, a transfer from Division I Florida A&M, looks to add depth to the Hurricane front court. 5'11 freshman swing forward Jasmine McSwain from Marietta, Ga., will also look to help bolster a thin post situation for GSW. The backcourt looks to be boosted by a pair of junior college transfers in Ottishia Burden and Stormey Smith. The 5'8 Burden joins GSW from Central Georgia Technical College. Smith, a 5'7 junior guard from Daytona State College, looks to handle the point duties for Southwestern.

Injury Woes:

The injury bug has already struck for the Lady 'Canes as key newcomer, 5'10 junior forward Shatoria "Scoop" Hudson tore her ACL and will be out for the season.
