Lady 'Canes picked Ninth in PBC Preseason Coaches Poll

AMERICUS, Ga. – The Peach Belt Conference has announced the results of the 2011-12 women's basketball season's preseason coaches poll. The Lady 'Canes of Georgia Southwestern State University have been picked to finish ninth out of the 13 women's basketball programs in the conference.

The Blue & Gold were picked to finish ninth in last season's preseason poll. The Hurricanes would finish the season fifth in the PBC West Division (12-14) and ninth out of 13 teams overall.

This season's team will feature five seniors, two juniors and five freshmen for Head Coach Kelly Britsky. Leading all returners is last year's leading scorer (11.2 ppg) for GSW, senior Jessica Bivins, who was also one of the conference's leading three-point shooters (.400 pct).

Joining Bivins in the backcourt from a year ago are senior guards Tania Walters and Terra Branch. Walters averaged 7.2 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game and 2.9 assists per game. She would lead the Lady 'Canes in assists, steals and minutes played in 2010-11. Branch (10.1 ppg) will also add scoring punch for GSW.

The two guards are joined by fellow returner, senior forward Samantha Smith, who will look to give the Blue & Gold a scoring and rebounding threat inside. She led all reserves in rebounding in 2010-11.

The Lady 'Canes will take to the court for the first time this season on Saturday, November 12th at 4:00 pm. GSW will play host to the University of Auburn-Montgomery in the confines of the Storm Dome.
