The Georgia Southwestern softball team placed a league-high five players on the recently released 2011 Peach Belt Conference All-Academic Team. Junior Gabby Buck and seniors Nichole Griffin and Katie Mueller were first team selections. Senior Heather Hodge and sophomore Cayla Smith received an honorable mention.

Georgia Southwestern senior Nichole Griffin was named to the 2011 Peach Belt Conference softball All-Conference first team on Thursday evening at the annual PBC Softball Championship banquet in Florence, S.C. Griffin led the Lady Hurricanes in most offensive categories this spring, including: batting average (.368), runs (30), hits (56), triples (4), total bases (81), slugging percentage (.533), and on-base percentage (.451).

The Georgia Southwestern softball team knew what was at stake when it traveled to Columbus State on Thursday evening. Win both games or the season was most likely over. Putting up a fight until the bitter end of both contests, GSW fell 3-2 and 7-5 to the Peach Belt Conference's second-place team.

It seems only fitting that on Senior Day, senior pitchers Katie Mueller and Tiffany Milstid held the Lander softball team without an earned run over two games, senior outfielder Nichole Griffin went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and senior infielder Heather Hodge turned in another pair of error-free performances at second base, leading Georgia Southwestern to a doubleheader sweep of the Bearcats on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Hurricanes won Game 1, 2-1, and took the nightcap, 3-2.

The Georgia Southwestern softball team earned a split with West Georgia on Friday afternoon, winning Game 2, 3-2, after dropping the opener, 3-1, at University Field. Leading up to the nightcap, GSW was 0-9 against the Wolves since 2007. The Lady 'Canes had been outscored 58-12 during that span. With the win, GSW improves to 7-11 this spring, while UWG falls to 9-3.

62 Hurricane student-athletes named to PBC Presidential Honor Roll
The Peach Belt Conference has announced that 1,079 student-athletes have been named to the Presidential Honor Roll from the league office in Augusta. A total of 62 GSW student-athletes earned the honor in 2009-10, a nine percent increase from last year's total.

Georgia Southwestern took two of three weekly Peach Belt Conference softball awards as junior Lyndi Duff was named Player of the Week and sophomore Jessica Martin was the Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 4. The Lady 'Canes become only the third school this season to have multiple winners in the weekly softball release. Duff hit .667 with two home runs - including a grand slam - and eight RBIs as GSW went 3-1 last week. Martin earned a pair of complete-game wins and posted a 0.00 ERA.

Georgia Southwestern junior Tiffany Milstid has been named the Peach Belt Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending February 28. Milstid went 2-0 for the Lady Hurri¬canes, allowing no runs in seven innings pitched. She held hitters to a .130 average with six strikeouts.

GSW splits twin bill with Lynn
Ashley Harris delivered the go-ahead run and Megan Wilkinson made a sliding catch for the final out as Georgia Southwestern rallied for a split with visiting Lynn University on Monday. After dropping the first game 3-1, GSW rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win Game 2, 4-3.

Invite cancelled; GSW will play DH on Saturday
Due to a saturated field and the heavy rains forecasted for the Americus area over the next 48 hours, the second annual GSW Early Bird Invitational has been cancelled. However, GSW will play a doubleheader against Brewton-Parker starting at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at Lady 'Canes Field.

Ward signs seven players for GSW softball
GSW head softball coach Eddie Ward today announced the signing of seven players for the 2009-10 academic year. Added to the roster are junior college transfers Robyn Butler, Lyndi Duff, Heather Hodge and Katie Mueller, along with NAIA transfer Anna Oswald and freshmen Cayla Smith and Megan Wilkinson.

The Armstrong Atlantic State softball squad picked up a Peach Belt doubleheader sweep of visiting Georgia Southwestern State on Friday afternoon. The Pirates won game one, 4-0, then took game two, 12-3, in six innings.

New youth programs launched
The Georgia Southwestern athletics department unveiled the GSW Baseball and Softball Buddies programs today. At select Hurricanes home games, a youth team (ages 5 to 13) will be recognized as the Hurricane Buddies team of the night presented by McDonald's.

Lady 'Canes rally to win season-opener
GSW came back from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Albany State 6-4 in eight innings in the first game of the GSW Invitational. Freshman Jessica Martin pitched 5.1 innings of scoreless ball to get the win. Long Ball Lifts Lady Canes on Senior Day
The Georgia Southwestern softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Brewton-Parker College on Tuesday afternoon at Lady Cane Field. The Lady Hurricanes bats were silenced in game one 4-1. However, a pair of two-run home runs by GSW in the third inning led to a six-run frame and paved the way for a comfortable 9-1 victory in the nightcap.

Canes Split With Albany State
The GSW softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Albany State on Saturday afternoon at Lady Cane Field. The two games played out on different ends of the spectrum. Game one was a two hour and 40 minute affair that saw 29 hits and 17 runs in 11 innings. In the end, the visiting Lady Rams were victorious 10-7. That was followed by a one hour and 15 minute game two that saw both pitchers combined to scatter nine hits as the Lady Canes won 2-1.

#11 Valdosta State Too Much For GSW
The visiting Blazers, ranked #11 in Division II, defeated Georgia Southwestern in both games of a doubleheader at Lady Cane Field in Americus on Tuesday evening. A six-run third inning doomed the Hurricanes in game one as Valdosta State won 7-5. VSU socked five home runs in game two to coast to the 11-2 victory.

Lady Canes Sweep Lander
Georgia Southwestern softball coach Eddie Ward said his team hasnt worked a lot with the bunt steal this season. Senior Jessi Croft doesnt even remember hearing it called in practice. But Ward called it on Saturday in the Lady Hurricanes second game against Lander, and it worked to perfection as Cherelle Pullen scored from second base on Tiffany Milstids bunt for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. After Lander tied the game in the sixth, it went into extra innings and Kassi Reneau drove in the winning run in the eighth to lift GSW to a doubleheader sweep. The Lady Hurricanes won both games by 2-1 scores.

Lady Hurricanes Softball off to a Perfect Start
Georgia Southwestern softball coach Eddie Ward couldnt be any happier after the first week of the 2008 season. His Lady Hurricanes defeated Claflin University 16-0, Savannah State University 19-0, and Armstrong Atlantic State University 2-1 in a weekend tournament and then dropped Wesleyan College 7-1 and 6-3 yesterday to arrive at their current 5-0 record .

Americus Junior Service League Supports GSW Softball
The new year brought good news to the GSW Lady Hurricanes Softball Team when it was selected as a special project by the Americus Junior Service League. Katy Hagerson, 2007 President of the Americus Junior Service League, visited campus recently and presented Head Coach Eddie Ward with a donation. The money will be used for the purchase of a new tarp cover and the construction of a bull pen.

Softball falls to #13 Valdosta State
VALDOSTA, Ga. The #13 Valdosta State University softball team scored their most runs in a game against Georgia Southwestern on Monday night at the softball complex. The Lady Blazers defeated the Hurricanes 14-4 in the first game and won 13-0 in game two, their ninth shutout of the season.
