The 2012 Georgia Southwestern Lady Hurricane softball team will be looking to recapture their magic that earned them their first ever PBC Tournament appearance in 2009. A senior-loaded team and a re-vamped coaching staff may just be the right recipe for Head Coach Eddie Ward.
Three members of this year's senior class were pivotal members of the previous tournament team as freshmen. Senior Jessica Martin will be depended on to be the Blue & Gold's ace. The Woodstock, Ga. native threw a twelve-inning shutout of UNC Pembroke in the Hurricanes' first game of the 2009 conference tournament. Fellow seniors Gabby Buck and Katie Wooten were key position players on that same team and have been GSW's biggest hitters ever since. The duo is first and second among active players in home runs and RBI's. Buck and Wooten have hit a combined 15 home runs and 92 RBIs in their GSW careers.
The Lady 'Canes roster includes six seniors, three returners and eight newcomers. The eight fresh faces are comprised of four junior college transfers, including Janna Anderson (Middle Georgia), Brittny Dennison (Darton College), Chelsea Givens (Wallace Community College) and Avery Purser (Middle Georgia). This year's four freshmen are Rachel McElroy (Grayson H.S.), Kiley Doster (Monroe Area H.S.), Ashley Cavender (Villa Rica H.S.) and Stephanie Milstid (Harris County H.S.)
New faces are also present on the coaching staff. The Hurricane family has welcomed Samantha Floyd as its new assistant coach and pitching coach. Floyd was a former standout and coach at perennial PBC power Armstrong Atlantic, and she also made a stop at Savannah State as an assistant coach before coming to Americus.
Georgia Southwestern's quest against the rest will begin on February 4th. The Hurricanes will travel to the campus of Georgia College and State University for a season opening tournament against Catawba and Queen's (N.C.). To see the complete 2012 GSW Softball schedule, click here.
