Smith earns PBC Player of the Week honors

GSW senior Jonathan Smith was named Peach Belt Conference men's soccer Defensive Player of the Week this afternoon by the conference office.

Smith makes some history as the first GSW soccer player to receive a PBC weekly award in what has been a week of firsts for the Hurricanes.  GSW won their first Peach Belt conference game on Saturday, shutting out USC Aiken 1-0.  The shutout was the team's first since the 2006 season.

Smith anchored a defensive backline that smothered the 2007 PBC co-Player of the Year, Kofi Akyere from USCA for 90 minutes and prevented him from taking a shot.

Earlier in the week, Smith and the Hurricanes defense held Thomas University's top two scorers to a combined three shots and one goal in a 2-0 loss.

An Albany, Ga. native and graduate of Deerfield-Windsor High School, Smith becomes the fourth GSW student-athlete to win an athlete of the week award from the PBC since the Hurricanes began competing in the conference in the fall of 2006.  Smith joins golfer Adam McKenney (September 26, 2008) and men's basketball players Adrian Robinson (January 2, 2006) and Anthony Sargent (February 25, 2008) as award recipients.

Smith and the Hurricanes are back in action tomorrow at Brewton-Parker College for a 4 p.m. non-conference match.
