Men's Soccer Releases 2008 Schedule

Hurricanes face six programs ranked nationally in 2007

The Georgia Southwestern State University men's soccer team unveiled its schedule for the 2008 season today.  The Hurricanes will play seven road matches and ten home matches in 2008, including the season opener at home against Barry on Thursday, August 28 at 4:00 p.m.

Four teams ranked in the final 2007 NSCAA/Adidas NCAA Division II Top 25 will oppose GSW this season.  Seven teams were ranked in their final regular season NSCAA/Adidas regional poll, and an eighth was ranked during the 2007 campaign.

"I believe our schedule for the upcoming year to be challenging, but not overwhelming," head coach Warren Russ said.  "While it is full of regionally and nationally ranked opponents, I feel with our experiences over the last year and our new additions we are better prepared to compete with the best.  However, there will be no easy games in 2008."

GSW will play some of the top teams in the southeast as they visit St. Leo and Montevallo, a squad that reached the NCAA Division II Final Four last season and finished #4 in the NSCAA/Adidas national poll.

The Hurricanes highlight the non-conference portion of their home schedule by facing West Florida (ranked 17th in the final 2007 national poll) on Monday, September 8 at 4:00 p.m.  Another strong non-conference opponent, Savannah College of Art & Design was ranked as high as #12 in the national NAIA polls last season and visits Americus on Wednesday, September 17 at 4:00 p.m.  In addition, GSW hosts Nova Southeastern and Tusculum.

The ‘Canes have six conference games slated again this season.  GSW will hit the road to play Francis Marion, Lander and Clayton State.  Lander and Clayton State finished the season ranked #11 and #22 in the country, respectfully.  Home contests include USC Aiken and UNC Pembroke before the 'Canes close out the regular season November 1 against North Georgia.

GSW will return 14 players from the 2007 squad and has added nine new players for the 2008 campaign.
