Hurricanes Climb Five Spots From Day 1, Finish Eighth At Spring Kickoff
FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. - The Georgia Southwestern men's golf team posted the third-lowest team score on Tuesday morning at the 15-team Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate to climb five spots from Day 1 and finish the two-day, three-round event in eighth place. Anders Olsson led the Hurricanes with a 1-under 70 in the final round to finish tied for 11th overall in the 84-player field with a 4-over 217.
Jungsun Lee tied for 32nd overall for Southwestern with a 225. Nicholas Ward and Nick Ray carded 2-over 73 rounds on Tuesday and both finished tied for 41st with scores of 277. Frasier Johnson tied for 59th with a 233.
"It was a good start to the spring season," said GSW head coach Darcy Donaldson. "We beat teams in our region we needed to beat."
The Hurricanes finished 35 strokes behind team champion Lincoln Memorial University. No. 13 Flagler College was a stroke back in second place with a 9-over 861 total. Spencer Schindler from Flagler ran away with the individual title as he finished seven strokes ahead of teammate Sebastian Barnova at 11-under.
GSW tied for second amongst the teams in the final round with 13 birdies and tied for third on the par 3s at 6-over. The Hurricanes played the par 3s at 18-over for the tournament, which tied for fifth across the field. On the individual side, Lee ranked sixth averaging a 3.20 score on the par 3s over the three rounds and Olsson tied for fifth on par 5 scoring, playing the holes at a combined 1-under par.
"There were a few mistakes that we need to clean up before the next event," said Donaldson. "Overall, I am proud of them."
The Hurricanes return to the links March 3 for Doublegate Collegiat Invitational in Albany, Ga.
