HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The 22nd-ranked Georgia Southwestern golf team sits in 17th place at the 20-team NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional after Day 1 of the three-day, three-round event. All-Peach Belt Conference First Team honoree Nate Gahman and All-PBC Tournament Team member Matthew Whittaker led the Hurricanes with rounds of 76 on Monday.
GSW trails opening-round leader No. 3 Barry University by 25 strokes.
The Hurricanes stumbled out of the gates in Round 1 as the team carded three double bogeys on the opening hole at the par-72, 6,928-yard El Campeon golf course at Mission Inn Resort & Club.
Whittaker ended up firing a team-best three birdies before finishing at 4-over for the day. Whittaker and Gahman are tied for 52nd in the 108-player field.
All-PBC First Team selection J.P. Griffin is tied for 71st after carding a 78 for GSW. Andrew Ritchot was a stroke back of Griffin with a 79. Anders Olsson posted an 86.
Ricardo Celia from Nova Southeastern fired the low-round of the day with a 3-under 69.
GSW returns for Day 2 of regional play with tee times starting at 12:50 p.m.
