AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern men's basketball team will travel to Auburn University Nov. 5 to take on the SEC-power Tigers in an exhibition game at 8 p.m. EST in the 9,100-seat Auburn Arena.
It's the second meeting in three years for the two schools. Auburn defeated GSW, 78-50, in 2010 in a game where the Hurricanes trailed AU by six (32-26) at halftime.
Auburn is coming off a 15-16 season where the Tigers were strong at home (14-3 in 2011-12), but struggled on the road (1-10). They return their top scorer, junior Frankie Sullivan (12.6 ppg), but will be without their second-leading scorer and top rebounder Kenny Gabriel (12.2 ppg, 7.3 rpg).
GSW is coming off of a 12-14 campaign where the Hurricanes were a perfect 9-0 in non-conference play before stumbling to a 3-14 record in Peach Belt Conference action after a rash of injuries and departures. Southwestern loses its top three scorers, including All-American and 2011 PBC Player of the Year Phillip Brown (missed 11 games in 2011-12), 2009 PBC Freshman of the Year Evan Mobley and 2011 PBC Freshman of the Year Colin Slotter (missed eight games). No. 4 scorer Milos Kleut (10.2 ppg) returns along with starter Matt Shaw who missed 11 games last year due to nagging injuries.
The Hurricanes have peppered their schedule with games against larger NCAA Division I opponents over the last three years. In addition to the Nov. 5 matchup at Auburn, GSW faces the University of Central Florida during the 2012-13 campaign. Southwestern traveled to Florida State for an exhibition last season prior to squaring off against AU in 2010. Before those contests, it had been almost 27 years since the Hurricanes played a school out of major Division I conference. GSW came up short against the University of Texas in 1983, losing 77-60 in Austin.
GSW opens its 2012-13 regular season with five-consecutive home games beginning Nov. 9 when Fort Valley State visits the Storm Dome at 3 p.m.
