Tip of the cap
AMERICUS, Ga. – After making history with individual preseason conference awards, it was a team effort that made history in Tuesday's preseason conference poll. Garnering ten out of a possible twelve first places votes, the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes were voted the preseason favorites to win the Peach Belt Conference in the 2011-12 season. It marks the first time ever that a GSW team of any sport won a preseason poll as a Division II member.
The Blue & Gold are riding high after a historic 2010-11 season of 20 wins and nine losses. The 13 win improvement from the year before was just the tip of the iceberg. The 2010-2011 season included GSW's first NCAA Division II men's basketball national ranking, first Peach Belt Conference division title in any sport, first NCAA Division II National Tournament appearance in any sport, first Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year and first NCAA All-American in any sport. GSW spent five weeks ranked in the Top 25, reaching as high as No. 16, and finished the season with a 20-9 record. Southwestern was well-represented on the Peach Belt All-Conference Teams, as well, with players on the First, Second and Third Teams. It's a list of accomplishments that was recognized and respected by Leeder's peers, as he was named the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year.
Earlier in the week Phillip Brown and Colin Slotter were named to the PBC's Preseason All-Conference team. Brown as the reigning PBC Player of the Year and Slotter as the reigning PBC Freshman of the Year made history with their nominations. It marked the first time in GSW Athletics history that two players have been named to a PBC Preseason All-Conference team in any sport.
