Hurricanes strengthen roster with fifth Division I transfer
 
Trayce Macon, a forward from Troy University (Ala.), has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball for Georgia Southwestern State University, head coach Mike Leeder announced Thursday.
 
"We are thrilled to get a player of Trayce’s caliber to round out our recruiting class," Leeder said. "He brings three years of Division I experience and participated on a team that advanced to postseason play at Troy."

Macon, who will be a senior for the 'Canes in the fall, started 23 games over two seasons with the Trojans. He redshirted the 2008-09 campaign at Troy and played one year at Santa Fe College (Fla.) before making the jump to NCAA Division I.  

The St. Petersburg, Fla. native averaged 7.1 points, 4.2 rebounds and 21.2 minutes as a sophomore at Troy. He appeared in 16 games last season as the Trojans won the Sun Belt Conference East Division regular season championship, finished with a 20-13 overall record and made the school’s second appearance in the National Invitation Tournament. Troy was defeated in the first round of the NIT by Mississippi as Macon chipped in three points.

Macon has fared well against top competition over his collegiate career. In his debut for the Trojans on November 11, 2007, Macon scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds at Alabama in 32 minutes of action. Last fall, he scored seven points and pulled down four rebounds at Florida on November 20.      
 
"Trayce is a player who can play inside and out," Leeder added. "He has been a proven producer."

Macon scored in double figures 10 times while at Troy. He led the squad in rebounds on five occasions while pulling down five or more boards 16 times.

"We look forward to blending his talents with the other six guys we have already signed for the upcoming season," Leeder said.

He becomes the seventh player signed by the Hurricanes since January for the 2010-11 season and joins fellow NCAA Division I transfers Colin Slotter (Murray State), Matt Shaw (Lipscomb), Phillip Brown (Air Force Academy) and Talmadge Bell (Coppin State).

Macon was a Health Services major at Troy.
