Marcus Scott Becomes Leeder's Fifth Signee for 2008-09
Hurricanes sign 6-foot-4 guard/forward from Maywood,
Ill.
Marcus Scott, a transfer Mineral Area College in Park Hills, Mo.,
has signed a letter of intent to play basketball for GSW, head
coach Mike Leeder announced today.
"We are extremely fortunate to get a player of Marcus' ability this
late in the recruiting process," said Leeder. "He is physically
strong player that can play a variety of positions for us this
season. For a player of his size he is an outstanding ball handler
and his ability to score using his strength will be a big plus for
us."
Scott, who will be a junior for the 'Canes this season, averaged
11.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game last year at
MAC. He was a first team MCCAC All-Conference and first team
NJCAA All-Region XVI selection.
"He played for an outstanding junior college program at Mineral
Area and was coached by former University of Missouri player Corey
Tate," said Leeder. "When I saw him play earlier this year, I felt
like he had a similar skill set to former Hurricane player Antonio
Campbell in that he had the strength to play around the basket, but
also the skill to handle the ball on the perimeter."
Scott becomes the fifth player signed by the Hurricanes for the
2008-09 season, following Matt Mendell, Brandon Sims, Damayrius
Adside and Sedale McGee-Jones.
"We expect that Marcus' big game experience will help us as we
prepare for our first season being eligible for conference
tournament play," said Leeder.
A 2005 graduate of Proviso East (Ill.), Scott helped lead the
Pirates to a 28-5 record, a regional and sectional championship and
the West Suburban Conference title. Proviso East earned a #4
national ranking during Scott's senior campaign and he averaged
17.6 points, 6.1 rebounds, three assists and two steals per
game. Scott earned West Suburban All-Conference honors twice,
was the Team MVP, the Sectional MVP and named the Sun Times "Player
of the Week" four times.
The 2008-09 Hurricanes season kicks off Saturday, November 15
against Puerto Rico-Cayey. The game will be played at
Valdosta State and tip-off time is 4 p.m.
