GSW senior guard Anthony Sargent has been named to the Peach Belt Conference men's basketball preseason All-Conference team Thursday, according to a release from the league office.
The team, which was chosen by the league's 11 sports information directors, also included USC Aiken All-American forward Chris Commons, Augusta State center Garret Siler, ASU guard Ben Madgen and Georgia College & State guard Shaun Keaton.
Sargent led the Peach Belt in scoring last year with 22.0 points per game for GSW, although he was not ranked among NCAA leaders because the Hurricanes were completing the transition to full DII membership, which was accomplished over the summer. Sargent was named All-Conference last year after leading the league in three-pointers per game (3.52) and was second in the conference with 1.88 steals per contest. Sargent scored in double-digits in 23 of the 25 games he played and had a season-high 38 points against Augusta State. That same night against ASU he hit a league-high 10 three-pointers.
Siler and Madgen were two of a trio of All-Conference players that helped lead the Jaguars to the national championship game last year. Siler, a 7-0 center, returns for his senior season after leading the nation in field goal percentage last year. Named to the Elite-Eight All-Tournament team, Siler led the PBC in rebounding last year with 7.8 per game and in blocks with 2.62 per outing. He was also ninth in scoring with 15.6 ppg. Madgen returns for his juinor year at guard after scoring 16.0 ppg his sophomore year and earning All-Conference honors. The Australian native was second in the PBC in free throw percentage and 10th in three-pointers made.
Chris Commons was one of two PBC players named an NABC All-American last year and the first USCA Pacer to do so. Returning for his senior season, the forward was named the PBC co-Player of the Year after helping the team to a school-record 27 wins. Commons was ranked second in the nation in scoring with 21.8 ppg while also pulling down 6.4 rebounds per game and shooting 54.3 percent from the floor.
Georgia College & State University's Shaun Keaton was named PBC All-Conference following the 2007-08 season. Now back for his senior season with the Bobcats, the guard was sixth in the PBC in scoring last year with 16.6 points per game. He finished second in the league in three-pointers made and eighth in three-point percentage. Keaton scored in double-digits in 25 contests and 11 games with 20 or more points.
The Hurricanes open the 2008-09 season on Novemeber 15 against
Puerto Rico-Cayey in Valdosta, Ga. and return to Americus the next
evening for the home opener against Carver Bible.
