GSW to retire No. 42 jersey of Willy Mathis on Wednesday

Wednesday at the Storm Dome is "A Night for Willy and Madeline."

The university will retire the late Willy Mathis' No. 42 jersey while giving all gate proceeds to Madeline's Mission. Mathis averaged 12 points and eight rebounds when he played for the Hurricanes in the early 1970s. He was inducted into GSW's Hall of Fame in October 2007 before losing his battle with cancer the following month.

Mathis is the first basketball player in school history to have their jersey retired.

Madeline's Mission began when Mathis' first granddaughter - Madeline Anne Wildes - passed away after she contracted meningitis at seven months. The Mission's goal is to show the importance of organ donation as hers were. It will donate teddy bears to transplant patients at Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta and to children hospitalized at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital and Sumter Regional Hospital.

GSW hosts Armstrong Atlantic, with a tip of 5:30 p.m. for the women. The men's game will follow the jersey ceremony.
