GSW takes two from Saint Leo

AMERICUS - The Georgia Southwestern baseball team swept a Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Saint Leo at Hurricane Stadium. GSW took Game 1, 6-1, and won Game 2, 5-4.

Andrew Anderson finished the day 7-for-8 at the plate with a pair of doubles, three RBIs, two runs scored and a stolen base to lead the Hurricanes.


After falling behind by a run in the first, Georgia Southwestern tied the game in the fifth and pulled away with four runs in the sixth to win Game 1 of the series against Saint Leo at Hurricane Stadium, 6-1.

GSW starter Trent Franzago (1-2) was spectacular, retiring 22 of 24 batters after surrendering the run in the first. Franzago retired the Lions in order for four straight innings and finished with eight innings pitched, four hits, one walk and seven strikeouts.

John Duran brought home GSW's first run of the game on a squeeze bunt. Southwestern added four runs in the sixth, highlighted by Paschel Poston's three-run double.

Corey Benson walked with the bases loaded in the seventh to bring in the final run of the game.  

Anderson and Jared Allen collected three hits apiece to lead the Hurricanes.

Ryan Powers had two hits for Saint Leo. 

Aaron Brandt (1-1) allowed four runs in five innings to take the loss for the Lions. He struck out three.   


The Hurricanes rallied from three runs down to take Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader.

Southwestern scored a run in the first behind two hits and two Saint Leo errors to take the early lead.

The Lions scored all of their runs in the third and jumped ahead, 4-1.

GSW shaved the margin to one after scoring two in the fourth. Allen doubled to lead off the inning and Anderson and Heath Lock drove in runs.

The Hurricanes tied things up the next inning when Anderson knocked in his second run of the game, bringing in Duran.

The score remained 4-4 until the seventh when Duran started the inning with a single, was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Michel Coffey, advanced to third on Allen's ground out and scored when Anderson struck one final blow with a game-winning single to left.

Anderson finished 4-for-4 in Game 2 with three RBIs for GSW. Duran and Lock collected two hits apiece.

Dustin Brown and Ware Hart had two hits for Saint Leo (3-5).

GSW starter Zach Whitman tossed 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs - three earned - while striking out four and walking two. Stephen Daneman (1-0) pitched a scoreless 1 1/3 innings to get his first win of the season.

Cody Johnson (1-1) took the loss for SLU after allowing one run in two innings of work. Starter Shaun Gough gave up four runs - three earned - in 4 1/3 innings. He surrendered seven hits and struck out two.

The Hurricanes (5-6) and Lions complete their series Sunday afternoon with a game at 1 p.m.
