'Canes win third straight

A four-run first inning launched the Georgia Southwestern baseball team’s offensive attack on Thursday afternoon at Golden Rams Park as the ‘Canes completed a season sweep of Albany State with a 10-3 win.

The Hurricanes had six players finish with two hits apiece as the team tallied 14 in the contest.

Kevin Carroll was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs to lead GSW.

Chris Lingham put GSW on the board in the first when he singled in Bud Long, who doubled to open the game.  Byron Haynes drove in a pair two batters later and the ‘Canes led 3-0 with no outs in the first. Southwestern finished the frame ahead 4-0.

Zack Stanton and Trent Dooley collected RBI singles in the second inning and a sacrifice fly from Michel Coffey in the third put the ‘Canes up 7-0.

GSW starter Stephen Daneman cruised through the opening three innings, retiring 9 of 10 batters faced – the lone runner coming when he hit a batter with a pitch in the first.

Albany State scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning.

Both teams scored a run in the sixth. Heath Lock’s RBI single drove in Carroll, who hit a two-out triple – the Hurricanes first three-bagger of the season – two batters earlier.

Southwestern scored the final two runs of the game in the eighth, highlighted by an RBI single from Carroll.

Daneman (1-0) went six innings, allowed five hits and three runs (two earned). Brandon Reeder threw two scoreless innings and Jared Allen set the Golden Rams down in order in the ninth.

Ken Nesbitt (2-1) faced five batters, surrendered four runs on four hits and a walk to take the loss for Albany State (11-7). ASU threw eight pitchers in the contest.

Over the last two games (18 innings), GSW has faced 14 pitchers.

The Hurricanes (12-6) travel to Augusta State for a Peach Belt Conference weekend series that begins with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
