Macon County Elementary student wins coloring contest award

Hunter Chase Curtis, a first grader from Macon County Elementary School was the boy selected as winner of the inaugural Hurricane Reading Club coloring contest.  Dannie Hunt and Brandon Sims from the GSW men's basketball teams recently presented Hunter (middle of picture holding yellow certificate) with his award and prizes.

Hunter received a GSW athletics t-shirt, a first place certificate and the opportunity to spend pregame with the men's team, where he'll receive a $25 gift card for the GSW bookstore, an autographed team photo, and will be on the court during introductions.  In addition, his classroom received a $100 gift card to Wal-Mart for school supplies.

Sarah Dye and Myleah Mitchell from Sumter County Elementary School were the girls selected as winners earlier in the month.

Children from seven counties in Southwest Georgia participated in the new Hurricanes Reading Club that was kicked-off with the coloring contest.

The reading phase of the program ran through the fall semester.  Administrators and/or teachers at participating schools set individual reading requirements and a program timetable.  Students who met their reading goal received two tickets to the January 17th men's and women's basketball games against UNC Pembroke, a coupon for a free bag of popcorn, recognition at halftime of the men's game and the opportunity to meet all GSW basketball players after the men's contest.

Several thousand children in grades K-5 were expected to participate in this initiative.
